THE MUSICAL COMEDY MURDERS OF 1940

Comedy spoof by John Bishop

Greenwich Theatre London
Opened 28 March 1988
Closed 7 May 1988

A spoof of 1930s and '40s "murderer-in-our-midst" movie thrillers. Set in December 1940 when a group of Broadway hopefuls assemble for a backer's audition of a new show at the estate of a wealthy "angel." Once all are assembled at the house, a blizzard cuts off any possible retreat, bodies start to drop, knives spring out of nowhere, masked figures drag their victims behind swiveling bookcases, and accusing fingers point in all directions!

Quotes From The Press

"...This stuff is put across with grotesque enthusiasm by Simon Cadell as Eddie McCuen, a self-confessed comedian who played bits in Helzapoppin, and Maria Friedman as Nikki Crandall, s suspiciously bright actress who both sings and keeps her eye on the plot..." Michael Coveney, The Financial Times (29 March 1988)

"...There's also a swell performance by Maria Friedman as teh showgirl who's really a naval intelligent officer - perky, sexy, exuding all-American gusto. She seems to be building a career as the best thing about disappointing shows - Girlfriends, Spin of the Wheel, etc - but surely someone somewhere has a worthwhile property for her..." Mark Steyn, The Independent (30 March 1988)
