Notes

Maria was appearing in the play April in Paris when the first concerts in Feb/March 1994 where staged.

For the concerts in Feb/March 1994 the Donmar Warehouse was transformed into a night club setting by designer Sue Blane and lighting designer Paul Pyant for Sam Mendes' then currently running production of Cabaret.

The performance on Sunday 27 February was recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 2.

At the 1995 Olivier Awards, Maria won the 'Best Entertainment Award' for this show - this was her first Olivier Award (and second nomination following Sunday in the Park with George).

This production, in a revised version, transferred to the Whitehall Theatre in May 1995 when it was renamed Maria Friedman by Extra Special Arrangement.

And finally, yes, that is Maria's brother - Richard Friedman - listed in the orchestra, as leader and violin.

Quotes From The Press

"...In this solo showcase, titled By Special Arrangement, she demonstrated her range and versatility with an extensive programme centred on familiar ground, but with various rewarding excursions into less well-charted and, sometimes previously unknown territory" Alan Jackson, The Times (22 February 1994) read more

"Pardon me if you've heard this one before. For once no apologies are necessary for repeating it. Maria Friedman is surely Britain's show voice of this (or any other) decade..." Jack Tinker, The Daily Mail (27 May 1994) read more

"...Her choice of songs ~ two yearningly sad Yiddish compositions from the Vilna Ghetto; lots of fairly rare Michel Legrand - lifts her performance out of the comfortable rut of most cabaret. The spunky arrangements from Jeremy Sams, Jason Carr, and more, are a bonus..." Antony Thorncroft, The Financial Times (30 May 1994) read more

"The 85-year-old Elisabeth Welch was in the house the night I went to hear Maria Friedman By Special Arrangement at the Donmar Warehouse. Fascinating to watch a cabaret legend gazing benevolently at a rising star. For Friedman undeniably has a vocal class, engaging candour and eclectic repertoire that puts her in the great tradition... A cracking show." Michael Billington, The Guardian (31 May 1994) read more

"...Go for the songs, go for the arrangements, go for the warmth but most of all go because Maria is beautiful and she has a great voice. I was captivated." Rick Jones, The London Evening Standard (3 June 1994) read more

"...Her programme of songs by Bernstein, Sondheim, Jacques Brel and Michel Legrand, with unexpected items by Kate Bush and Elton John, was sheer bliss..." Michael Coveney, The Observer (12 June 1994) read more

Radio Broadcast
